Military Leader
Norman Schwarzkopf was born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1934. He served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War, the first (1965-66) as an adviser and the second (1969-70) in command of an infantry battalion. In 1983 he was deputy commander of U.S. forces in the invasion of Grenada. As commander in chief (1988-91) of the U.S. Central Command (responsible for the Middle East and Africa), he led U.S. and Western forces in the Persian Gulf War.
