Jonas Salk was born in New York City in 1914. He taught at the universities of Michigan and Pittsburgh and was director (1963-75) of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies at the University of California, San Diego.
While at Pittsburgh, he developed a killed-virus vaccine against Poliomyelitis, the Polio vaccine, which has virtually eliminated polio epidemics in the United States and other countries where it is used.
