Paul Newman was born in Cleveland, Ohio on 26 January 1925, the son of Arthur S. and Theresa (Fetzer) Newman. Paul Newman earned his BA from Kenyon College in 1949 and did postgraduate work at Yale University School of Drama. He also studied with Lee Strasberg at the Actor’s Studio.
Paul Newman appeared on Broadway in the successful show Picnic which ran from 1953 to 1954, as well as several other Broadway productions. He won Best Actor award at the 1958 Cannes International Film Festival for his role in The Long Hot Summer. Paul Newman has starred in many films including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969, The Sting, 1973 and The Color of Money, 1986, for which he won an Academy Award in 1987 for best actor. He continues to act and has directed several films, including Where the Money Is, 1998.
Paul Newman has won several awards for his work in the film industry including an Honorary Academy award for career achievement from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in 1986 and a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in 1994.
Paul Newman has also driven race-cars professionally. Paul Newman is president of Newman’s Own Foundation, Inc. Newman’s Own produces organic foods and the profits are donated to various charities.
He married, first, Jacqueline Witte in December 1949. They had three children, Scott (now deceased), Susan and Stephanie. He married, second, Joanne Woodward in January 1958. They had three children, Elinor, Melissa and Clea.
